Why now

Miami-Dade’s waste system is changing

On July 31, 2026, Miami-Dade County unveiled its Zero Waste Master Plan — a long-term roadmap for reducing waste, increasing recovery and reuse, expanding recycling and organics management, and moving toward a more circular economy.

The plan contains 31 coordinated strategies that will be implemented over time. For businesses, now is a good time to understand the plan and start learning the systems and practices that may become increasingly important as implementation moves forward.

Why food and organics

Why start with food?

Food scraps and other organic materials are one of the biggest opportunities to keep valuable resources out of the waste stream. Miami-Dade’s zero-waste planning specifically addresses food recovery, composting, organics processing, and the infrastructure and policies needed to manage organic materials differently.

These workshops help businesses understand this part of the transition and identify practical steps they can take now — from food recovery and organics diversion to commercial composting options — without assuming any particular regulation or mandate has already taken effect.
