Highest and best use

Food first. Animals when appropriate. Soil next. Landfill last.

“Highest and best use” simply means that someone or something is going to eat it. Nothing goes to waste when it comes through Fertile Earth.

1
Pallets of donated fresh tomatoes ready for community pickup

People first

If the food is good, we get it to friends, families, neighbors and local charities through our surplus-food alerts.

2
Cattle eating recovered food scraps on a partner farm

Animals next

Damaged or spoiling but still safe? It becomes nutritious feed for animals at partner farms.

3
A handful of living vermicompost with red wiggler worms

Then the soil

Beyond viability, our beloved worms and microbes turn it into rich organic compost for gardens and farms.
