Read about the pilot

South Florida’s zero-waste direction

A new era of organics recovery

Miami-Dade County’s Zero Waste Master Plan sets an ambitious long-term direction for reducing disposal and expanding alternatives such as organics recovery. For local businesses, food-waste reduction and recovery is becoming part of the region’s larger waste-management conversation. Fertile Earth has been building that local capacity since 2008.

Experts in the field

Founded in 2008 and led by Dr. Lanette Sobel (MS, DPM), with consultants holding a combined 112 years of composting and soil-science experience.

Professionalism

Timely and efficient. Our trucks carry portable washing systems to leave pickup sites cleaner than we found them — clean, odor-free composting.

Service area

Commercial food-waste generators throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and the Florida Keys.

Capacity

The right equipment, a network of farmers on top of our own 17 acres, and the team and connections to handle the volume.

The right tools for the job

Built for food — not garbage

Food is much heavier and wetter than regular garbage, so regular garbage trucks and trash containers aren’t designed to handle it. When we started in 2008, no truck on the market could do the job — with pressurized water tanks on the side to clean the toters — so we had one custom-built.

Our latest truck also has an integrated scale, to better report your ESG goals, keep our operation running smoothly, and keep your business feeling proud.

Questions

Commercial composting FAQ

What are the typical costs for your commercial service?

Pricing is customized based on your volume and pickup frequency. Most clients see net savings when factoring in reduced traditional waste-hauling costs. Request a custom quote to receive a detailed cost analysis for your operation.

What sizes of containers do you provide, and where are they stored?

We provide leak-proof 65-gallon toters (holding 300–500 lbs depending on material type) and 3-yard dumpsters for higher-volume generators. During our site assessment, we’ll determine container placement that minimizes disruption to your operations.

Do you require a long-term contract?

We offer flexible contract terms tailored to your business needs. Contact us to discuss options that work for your operation.

Can your process handle meat, dairy and heavy food scraps?

Absolutely. We gratefully collect that type of organic “waste,” and we will find a good home for it all.

Note: in Palm Beach County, currently only vegan items are allowed.

How quickly can we get started?

Most clients are operational within 1–2 weeks of the site assessment. We provide containers, staff training, and begin regular pickups on your preferred schedule.

What happens to our food waste after pickup?

Nothing goes to waste when it comes through Fertile Earth. If good food comes to us (and the company getting rid of it agrees), we share it with a large network of friends, family and neighbors through our alert system. If it’s no longer right for people, our network of farms receives it as high-value animal feed. And when food is beyond viability, it feeds our beloved worms and microbes to make compost.
