Program overview
The Medical Billing and Coding program prepares students for entry-level employment in a variety of healthcare settings as a medical coder, coding technician, billing specialist, or claims clerk. Students learn to translate diagnoses and procedures into the industry-standard code sets ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II, and to prepare and submit insurance claim forms (CMS-1500 and UB-04) for reimbursement.
The program totals 1,000 clock hours (576 theory, 304 lab, and 120 externship) and is offered in Hybrid and Traditional formats. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a diploma and are eligible to begin entry-level employment in medical billing and coding.
What you'll be able to do
Perform administrative, billing, and coding functions within a medical biller-coder's scope of practice. Accurately translate diagnoses and procedures into ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes. Complete insurance claim forms (CMS-1500 and UB-04) for reimbursement. Apply ethical and legal concepts and communicate effectively in the role. Develop employment strategies for a successful transition into the job market.

Good to know
Includes a 120-hour supervised externship at an approved site. The school does not require an exit exam to graduate; where licensure applies, graduates take the applicable exam.
